The 2016 Arbor Day Celebration was held at St Augustine Beach City Hall last Friday evening.  The St. Augustine Beach Tree Board and Beautification Advisory Committee hosted this event as part of the Cities National Tree Friendly Community Certification and National Arbor Day Celebration. This Arbor Day event was attended and enjoyed by hundreds of beach residents and visitors to the beach.

Close to 20 information booths were set up outside the beach city hall building, sharing information about the environment and ways to keep our earthly home healthy.

Guests were invited to touch a live lobster, provided by Whitney Lab as well as given the opportunity to hold a baby alligator, supplied by Florida Fish and Wildlife. With bees disappearing at an alarming rate, visitors were invited to see the inside of a bee hive and informed of  ways to help sustain our bee population.

This year awards were handed out to students from RB Hunt Elementary School for the most creative posters, depicting the importance of trees and nature.  Students from Sebastian Middle School and St. Augustine High School entered written work for the poetry contests. Best Residential and Commercial Florida Friendly Landscape Awards were also presented.

With a packed house watching, the awards were handed out by The St. Augustine Beach Tree Board and Beautification Advisory Committee members, LeaAnne Lombardi and Craig Thompson. A special visit by Smokey the Bear was a highlight of the evening.
