With tents and booths set up at the pier pavilion from the many sponsors sharing the latest in BMX gear, not even the 40 mph wind could keep the diehard BMXer away. Hotels at the beach and around town were sold out to visitors to this event. “This event brings a lot of money to this place,” said Xavier Mendez as he straddled his BMX bike watching the riders.

This year we had many special guests on hand to share their talents and knowledge, ” said Ed Ferri from PlanetBMX. “We flew them in for the event.”

BMX legend Mat Hoffman was there for all to admire. Hoffman is considered one of the best vert ramp riders in the history of the sport. The Mat Hoffman pro BMX and BMX II video games were released for PlayStation and X Box and is a favorite of BMX riders around the world. People of all ages lined up for autographs or just to shake the hand of their BMX heroes.

After a day of tricks, equipment, bikes and heroes, the riders gathered at the pavilion Sunday morning for a ride through St Augustine ending at the No Name Bar in downtown. The riders spent the day with a ride to the skate park for a group shot and onto the lighthouse, over the Bridge of Lions to the fort and than peddling through Old Town.

The riders were respectful, dedicated to the sport and did their best to put safety first as they rode along the streets of St Augustine. Some would say they are a tough looking group of riders, with tattoos, spiked hair and piercings, but a little closer look showed dads and their sons, spending time doing what they both loved together.

I love the brotherhood of the sport,” shared Christian Jendrasak, from Black Widow BMX, as he looked over the crowd on the fort green. The solidarity could be felt in the air as visitors traveled throughout the crowd. Everyone was just out to have a good time, on a sunny Spring weekend in St Augustine. By the looks of it, I would say it was a success!
