As the sun rose on St Augustine Beach Saturday morning, hundreds of Don’s Friends and Friends Of Anastasia State Park gathered on the shore ready to run for charity.

Celebrating the eleventh Endless Summer Run, the runners ran either a 5K or a 10K along the beach and throughout Anastasia Park. “We are overwhelmed by the wonderful support from our friends and the entire community.” said Jim and Rene Wauldron, Don’s mom and step father. With both races sold out, over 400 runners joined in to remember and honor their friend Don Ausman.

Don was a Great young man who dedicated his time to helping others in need. He was involved with the Alternative Break, where students use their vacation time to travel and help others less fortunate.” said Jim Wauldron “We started Don’s foundation in his honor, to continue to promote his passion.” he continued.

Don Ausman was a runner and spent many hours running throughout the St Augustine Beach area. He lost his life due to a tragic accident at the age of 22 years old on Jan 28, 2009. As a student at Michigan State University, Don was involved with a group of concerned students who chose to spend their vacation helping others. The Alternative Break Program gives students the opportunity to give back, unselfishly and to put the needs of others first. “Having fun, Helping others.” is the slogan of the Don Ausman Foundation.

While involved in The Alternative Break Program, Don and his group traveled to Africa and Mexico. The students spent their time in Mexico assisting the poorest and most vulnerable by rehabilitating a local school. While in Ghana, Africa Don’s giving spirit was felt by everyone he met especially the multitude of children who would follow him throughout the villages where he volunteered.

With the funds secured since 2009, The Don Ausman Foundation has donated over $40,000 to The Alternative Break Program at three colleges. Don’s alma-mater, Michigan State University as well as local schools Flagler College and the University of St Augustine have all received funding for their program from the Don Ausman Foundation. The funds secured help those students who would choose an Alternative Break but do not have the funds to pay for their expenses while they help those less fortunate.

During his short life Don was a true inspiration not only for his family but for those he met around the world. Saturday, runners of all ages enjoyed the morning doing what they loved, running and remembering Don, a friend who made a lifelong commitment to better the world-one act at a time. With the assistance of the Don Ausman Foundation many young people will have the opportunity to touch a life and keep his dream alive.
