A pink and gold sunset at St. Augustine Beach was the backdrop to Wednesday evenings’ bluesy, jazzy performance by the Duffy Bishop Blues Band. With food provided by The Purple Olive, it was a perfect night to enjoy the magic of the beach.

The evening’s talent, blues vocalist, Duffy Bishop, has an impressive list of honors, including: Best Female Vocalist, and Best Regional Blues Act from the Muddy Awards. A spot in the Cascade Blues Assoc. Hall of Fame and Entertainer of the Year from the Washington Blues Society are just a few of the accolades Bishop has amassed.

Duffy and long-time collaborator, guitarist, and husband Chris Carlson have been performing for the masses for over a decade in Portland, Oregon, as well as headlining in venues across the USA, Canada, Norway, Japan, Hong Kong and Austria. A natural choice, Bishop also stared as Janis Joplin in the Seattle production of the original play “Janis”. Now here she is in St. Augustine Beach, laying down that wrenching, raw, gentle, tender sound for all to enjoy on this magical night, and what a night it was!

At 7 o’ clock, a larger-than-ever crowd had gathered in the pavilion and on the sand. Chris and the band opened with some “bring it on home” tunes when suddenly, the raw power and gravely, Janis Joplin style voice of Bishop was heard somewhere in the crowd. The soul and power of her voice had every person in the audience searching for the talented vocalist.

Suddenly, out of the crowd comes Duffy Bishop, Queen of the Blues, belting out real emotion as she walks toward the stage. Engaging folks with her playfulness along the way, Bishop believes people like to be part of something they see and her use of a cordless mike made everyone a part of the show. By the time Bishop reached the stage everyone was an instant fan.

The Blues continued throughout the evening with “The Duffy Bishop Show.” What an experience! Gritty, intense, emotional, a bit of Cabaret, Jazz and Rock and Roll. That’s her mix, “dance ‘till you drop” was the atmosphere. The dance floor was packed for every number, with the music bringing everyone to their feet. It was impossible to sit still!

When not touring with the Band, Duffy and Chris are a part of the Teatro ZinZanni, a circus/ cabaret/ tent show in Seattle, San Francisco and Europe. Bishop stars in the lead roll as Madam ZinZanni. Their 8th album “Find Your Way Home “was released in April 2014.
