They’re Back

The grounds of Flagler College were a-bustle last weekend as hundreds of new students arrived for the 2015 – 2016 school year move-in day. Close to 900 new students (freshman and transfers) will be joining the Flagler family this school year. Students from around the globe have chosen to call Flagler home and for many, the proximity to the beach is one of the main reasons.

Michaela Reilly and her sister Bryanna came down from Winston-Salem North Carolina. A junior this year, Michaela, who has a duel major in Spanish and Latin American Studies, noted the beach as a main reason for choosing Flagler College. “I didn’t know where I was going to go,” said Michaela. “I chose Flagler because of the reputation and because it is a Liberal Arts College by the beach. It was the location and the history that drove me to this town.”

According to the Flagler College website 63% of the students are from Florida, while the remaining students come from 43 other states and 36 foreign countries. Over 2,800 students will attend Flagler this year with the 2015 – 2016 yearly cost including: tuition and fees at $16,830 and room and board (including meals) at $9,600. According to US News and World Report, Flagler College ranked 8th in the Best Regional Colleges in the South in 2014.

The historic aspect of Flagler College is another reason many choose to attend. Located in the heart of the historic district of St Augustine, one of Flagler’s primary buildings is the old Ponce de Leon Hotel. Now used for dorms and offices, Ponce Hall is stunning, and with a commitment to architectural and artistic detail, it is no wonder Ponce Hall is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

History major, Evan Wieder is a senior from Miami. “This will be my fourth year here,” said Wieder as he sat at the information table directing new students. “There are a boatload of opportunities Flagler has to offer. I like the small size. I am able to get to know my professors, plus it is easier to meet people and make friends that will last past my college years.”

With classes starting on August 27th the students will be treated to a variety of fun and welcome activities before the big day. Trolly Rides will be offered for those wishing to get to know the town and a beach party will be held at the pier pavilion with bands and food giving the students the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful beach. On Saturday the welcome activities will commence with a fun trip to Disney World.

The 2015 – 2016 school year is upon us. Time to get ready for the traffic, the students and the economic boost they bring to town. Welcome Back Flagler students. Hit the books with abandon but remember to have fun. Remember…your education is your key to the future and your future is here.
