Kids and Art - A Gathering Of Friends 2015

Gathering of friends 2015 (55) (800x600)

Sunday was the day to CREATE at the Second Annual “A Gathering Of Friends Children’s Art Festival” sponsored by The Friends of the St Augustine Amphitheater. Close to 2000 people filled the Amptheatre to join in the fun of music, art, dance, theater, writing and more. Children were able to fill their “creative spirit” on Sunday with the many hands-on activities available.

The Friends of the St Augustine Amphitheatre is a not-for-profit organization committed to make the Amphitheatre more accessible to the community. Separate from the St Augustine Amphitheatre, the Friends are also involved with A December to Remember and free Music and Art Camps for kids among other things.

Author Francis Keiser was there sharing her Pete the Pelican book series.

Author and artist Francis Keiser was there sharing her Pete the Pelican book series. “There were a lot of kids here today,” said Keiser. “I was able to help the children connect to nature and they were really interested.”

Pete the Pelican lives at the beach. Along with the special books, on Pete’s table were shells, feathers and different items you would find at the beach. “We talked about science and the ways the children use science in their daily lives,” Kaiser said.

The arts community came out in support of this annual event. Ancient City Poets were once again on hand to share their love of the written word and the St Johns County Library was there with the Bookmobile, ready to sign the children up for a true treasure, their first library card. A favorite of the children was the drum circle. Every child enjoys rhythm and the Alex Hayward Drum Booth just fit the bill. One of the most creative stations was the puppet booth. The children were able to create their own puppet to bring home and put on a show for Granny and Gramps to watch.

Kelly and Anna Smith enjoy the day….Arrrrr

Everywhere you looked a child was running around hiding behind a painted face. Five year old Anna Smith was there with her mom, Kelly. Anna, a PreK student at Anastasia Baptist Preschool, wore the sign of a pirate painted on her face complete with patch and scar. “I liked the face painting best!” Anna exclaimed. “It is great to have the activities for the kids. We really appreciate it,” said mom, Kelly Smith.

This community event has proven to be a true inspiration. It not only has brought the community together it has inspired every child in attendance to find their creative spirit! And on Sunday they most definitely did!
