YIPPEE…We Are In The Top Ten!

St Augustine Beach Pier

A Sunny Day At The St Augustine Beach Pier

St Augustine Beach has once again been chosen as a Tripadvisor Best Beach in the USA award winner. Up five spaces from last year’s 14th place, SAB is now in the top ten, coming in 9th place. Joining three other Florida beaches; St Pete Beach (2nd) Pensacola Beach (5th) and Clearwater Beach (8th). St Augustine Beach is “ known as a secret that’s becoming less well-kept.” according to a Tripadvisor reviewer and “This is the kind of beach that you go when you want to relax.” according to another reviewer.

Many of the reviewers said that the beach is clean, calm and a great place to relax. As residents we are fortunate to know first hand what the reviewers are talking about. According to TripAdvisor, it is the quantity and the quality of traveler reviews and ratings for beaches that were gathered in the past 12-month that determine a place ranking.

Valentine Art Show Brings Visitors To The Pier

For eight years the T-n-T Winter Art Show at the Pier Park has been happening so artist have an outlet to show and sell their art. From musicians and painters, to woodworkers and stained glass artists, this weekend was no different. Thousands of visitors to the beach perused the promenade and enjoyed the art, the music and the sights and sounds of the beach. With the trees on the promenade being set twelve feet apart and every space equipped with electric power, this has proven to be the perfect space to have a show. Stained glass artist, Susan Tewksbury has spent the past six years enjoying the Valentine weekend in St Augustine Beach.

Specializing in “Sailboats In Glass” Tewksbury states,  “I wish every city would set up shows like this. It is the perfect size show and the venue is amazing.”

With the sun shining through the stained glass as it hung in the booth, you could see the true talent in the artwork. “As long as the weather is cold we do great.” said Craig Tewksbury. “The cold keeps the tourists in the park and off the beach. Giving them the best of both worlds.” he continued.

Along with the T-n-T art shows, the pier park is also the place to be every week on Wednesdays. Enjoy the art, homemade crafts, food and fresh fruit and vegetables every Wednesday at the Wednesday Market sponsored by the St Augustine Beach Civic Association.

A New Hotel…Developer Is Waiting For Approval

Beachfront Hotel 2015

The old Beachfront Hotel is slated for demolition approval and a new hotel will be built in its place.

The old Beachfront Hotel, purchased in September by Key International, for close to ten million dollars, is slated for demolition approval. Upon approval a new hotel will be built in its place. Key International is a Miami based real estate and development company known for high-end commercial and residential projects. First scheduled for renovation, the hotel was soon deemed unsafe and cost prohibitive for renovation.

Located oceanfront next to Pier Park, the new hotel is scheduled in two phases. Upon final approval from the SAB City Commission, phase one will include 180 guest rooms and phase two will include an additional 93 guest room.  There will also be a conference room available for special events.  When all is said and done there will be close to 270 parking spaces, not quite enough for the amount of guests.

Plans presented in front of the SAB Planning and Zoning Board last week show the hotel as 35 feet high with an additional 10 feet that will be added to the hotel for special architectural features and other roof structures. There were no negative comments from the board.
