Enjoying a perfect Fall morning

The weather could not have been any more perfect for the first annual St Augustine & St Johns Board Of Realtors 5K walk/ Run for Education. The Fall temperatures were welcomed for the over 60 participants who decided to run or walk along the shoreline and up A1A Beach Blvd for this event. With the waves lapping at the shore, this group started in the sand with a cruise down the beach to Ocean Hammock Park, along the boardwalk and than traveled back to the pier park at whatever pace they chose. Awards were given out in both the runner and walking category.

This 5K was one of the many fundraisers the group holds with the focus on education. All proceeds will go to the board’s scholarship fund. Organized through the SASJCBR Education Committee, this group has been awarding scholarships to deserving St Johns County graduating seniors since 1994. “All seniors in St Johns County are able to apply for a scholarship with one scholarship being reserved for a SASJCBR member.” said Steve Gay a St Augustine & St Johns County Board of Realtors, Board of Director and Education Committee Vice Chairman. According to Gay, in 1994 the first scholarship that was given was for $250.00. “Last year they gave over $9000.00 in scholarship funds.” Gay said, “and we hope to give out even more this year.” he continued.

“This is a great day!” exclaimed 14 year old Jennifer Taylor. Jennifer is a freshman at Nease High School. She runs three times a week and on Saturday she ran barefoot down the beach with her dad. Jennifer is into photography and although graduation is a few years away, she is one of the many St Johns County students who plan to apply for the SASJCBR scholarship.

Vanessa takes a rest after her run.

According to many at the event on Saturday, Ron Barry, the chairman of the SASJCBR Education Committee has been putting his heart and soul into this project. Although he was unable to attend this event he was thought of and mentioned numerous times throughout the morning. Founded in 1964, the St Augustine & St Johns County Board of Realtors is there to assist the members become successful in their chosen field. The St Augustine & St Johns County Board of Realtors has over 800 members. Not only are realtors involved, but also member partners. “We have title and mortgage companies, pest companies anyone who assists realtors can be a member.” said Gay. “We meet on the first Monday of the month at the board office.” Gay continued. The office is located at 1789 Lakeside Avenue in St Augustine.

Vanessa Valenzauela is a senior at Pedro Menendez High School and another SJC student who plans to apply for the scholarship. “The scholarship is really helpful.” explained Vanessa. “ Not a lot of people have money for college and the scholarship will really help.” she continued. Vanessa plans to apply at F.S.U. next year with the hopes of going into the field of physical therapy. With her grandmother as a member of the SASJCBR, this is just another avenue to help defray the high cost of education.

As the group gathered in the pier pavilion to gobble up the donated cakes and coffee and accept their trophies, you could genuinely see a community come together for the students of St Johns County. Gay addressed the crowd with a reminder, “The idea of the scholarship is for the students to use the money any way they see fit. There are no restrictions.” he said. With the cost of education as well as the cost of living rising at the rate it is, the scholarship funds will unquestionably be of use to those students of St Johns County awarded with a scholarship.

“This is a great cause.” said Annia Torres of Watson, A1A Realty. We believe all of St Johns County will agree, our children are the future of this community and there is nothing like the proper education to help them on their way. Just as Jennifer exclaimed…It truly was a “Great Day!”
