Riding The Wave Of Fun

Sunburn faces were the look for the surfers at last weeks Surf Camp, sponsored by The PIT Surf Shop. Close to 30 youngsters took to the waves with surfboard under foot as they were instructed on the latest techniques from veteran surfers and camp counselors. With a ratio of 4 campers to each counselor, this surf camp is one of the most well respected in the area.

This is the 15th year the Pit Surf Shop has hosted a surf camp, and to the delight of the campers it just keep on getting better. Know throughout NE Florida as one of the better surf camp around, people travel for close to an hour daily to attend. Twelve year old Keegan travels from Orange Park and seemed to be having the time of his life. “I like riding the big, huge waves,”said Keegan after riding a wave to the shoreline. “This is Awesome!”

Eleven year old Dominik travels all the way from Punta Gorda to participate in the Pit Surf Camp. While the family is on vacation, Dominik is able to spend his time on the water doing what he loves…surfing.

“I love riding good waves,” exclaimed Dominik, “I am having so much fun.”

This is thirteen year old Nick Day’s third time attending The Pit’s surf camp. Nick, a middle school student from from Gamble Rogers Middle School took to surfing like a pro. After riding the waves all morning long, he finally came in for a break. “I like looking for the perfect wave and riding it smooth,” Day said as he gazed into the horizon getting a sip from his water bottle. “I either skate of surf, “ he continued.

The Pit Surf Camp has been going on for 15 years. Last weeks camp had close to 28 campers ranging in age 6 to 13 years. “ Surf camps is a great way to enjoy the ocean, have fun, get some exercise, and make new friends,” said Sean Frye, Pit Surf Shop manager. When asked about the best part of surf camp, Frye exclaimed, “It’s the stoke. It’s seeing the stoke on kids faces when they catch their first wave!”
